Planning Your Will
Everyone should have a will
A will enables you to do the following:
- Name a personal representative of executor who will oversee the disposition of your estate according to your desires and intentions.
- Nominate a "guardian of the person" to raise minor children if the other parent is not available.
- Provide a guardian to handle property minor children might inherit.
- Continue your Christian stewardship after your death by making special gifts to charitable organizations such as Red Bird Mission.
- Avoid unnecessary taxes and costs in the settlement of your estate.
- Make gifts and care for the needs of persons other than family members.
Where to begin
Before consulting an attorney about drafting a will, consider the following questions:
- What does my estate include (cash, real estate, life insurance, securities and other investments, retirement plans, personal items)?
- What assets require special treatment, such as a closely held business?
- What happens to the estate if my spouse and I die together?
- Do I need to name a guardian for minor children?
- In addition to my spouse and children, are there other persons dependent upon me for primary care (aged parents, grandchildren, friends)?
- To whom should I leave my assets if I am single? Should I leave my estate outright or in trust?
- After my death, how can I continue to support charitable organziations that I supported during my life?
